What is SD-WAN?

A Software Defined approach to managing Wide Area Networks

SD-WAN is Software Defined-Wide Area Networking, and essentially it is a new packaging of networking technologies allowing you to centrally manage your networks from one single controller, factoring in many important and practical elements that are deemed necessary in any digital transformation that you may be looking to adopt, from automation, enhanced security and importantly increased visibility which wouldn’t be seen on a legacy network.

Just another buzz-word- or

Is SD-WAN the way forward?

Nobody whats a buzz word that can’t actually deliver when applied to your business, so before you can answer the question of is SD-WAN the way forward for your organisations digital transformation journey it’s imperative that you are conducting your own research, which for many of us starts with the basics and gaining an understanding of exactly what SD-WAN is and what it can offer to your business.

When it comes to SD-WAN, as with any new technology there’s always a buzz around it, which can leave you wondering the truth surrounding it…

From the myths and misconceptions, to whether it’s an alternative to MPLS (which it’s not, here at Data Installation & Supplies we see it as a supplement) and whether adopting SD-WAN is the right solution to your business and individual needs, not to mention the understanding you need to gain in order to know how secure it is.

Take a few moments to read all the information provided across this page and the other related pages, watch the short video clip below and then get in touch with us as we would love the opportunity to discuss SD-WAN with you further, please contact Data Installation & Supplies on 01274 869 099 or info@disnorth.com.

FAQ's

Is SD-WAN secure?

At DIS we completely understand before you even begin to consider any new network management solutions the first and most important question that will spring to your mind is the security aspect, the simple answer to this is the security will depend on the solution that you choose to adopt.

With SD-WAN adoption we will be moving the traffic from your secure, structured private MPLS onto direct internet, so there is the reality that it will be exposed to hackers and malware.

At Data Installation & Supplies we offer a secure solution, which is designed with security and data protection in mind.

Is SD-WAN a replacement to MPLS?

We don’t see SD-WAN as a replacement for MPLS, we see it as a supplement, which allows you enhanced control across your security and applications.  When you implement a successful SD-WAN solution into your networking, it transforms your digital journey, keeping MPLS as the foundation of your connectivity, in essence connecting all your sites.

When SD-WAN is introduced in addition to MPLS at each individual location it will enrich application and security control.

When a robust MPLS network, with highly reliable and consistent connectivity is complemented with SD-WAN it creates new levels of visibility, control and responsiveness.

What Are
The Benefits?

Improved performance

SD-WAN detects applications and prioritises traffic flow automatically, according to your needs, so that everybody has a better experience whatever their workload.

Application Intelligence

You can send business data across primary and secondary connections, in the event of a line failure ‘application intelligence’ will ensure key applications have priority on the remaining line.

Centralised Management

Centralised management allows you to manage a single set of security policies and device health standards in one location for all devices, meaning that everything is kept up to date.

Zero Touch Provisioning

Speeds up new site deployment and replacement.  Your network appliances are shipped directly from the vendor, once connected this pushes out remote configurations.

Standardisation

Standardisation within SD-WAN means that all devices are kept up to date, the configuration is backed up and has an identical security policy.

Easy Set-Up

SD-WAN works with 4G and 5G connectivity, you can get it set up in your new location immediately, whilst the fixed line connectivity is being installed.
